Mediterranean Diet Good for Your Heart
The benefits of following a Mediterranean Diet have been touted for quite some time based on observational studies, which showed an inverse association between following a Mediterranean Diet and risk of cardiovascular disease.
Until now.
This week, the results of a randomized controlled study – the cream of the crop when it comes to research – were released and showed that about 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes, and deaths from heart disease can be prevented in people at high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet. What does the Mediterranean diet entail? Lots of healthy fats like olive oil and nuts, fish, fruits and vegetables, and even a glass of wine with meals. You can get a lot more information about the Mediterranean Diet at Oldways, a nonprofit organization that teaches people about food and nutrition.
I have been to different parts of the Mediterranean including Israel, Greece, and Italy (where I studied abroad for a semester) and have loved the culture and food on all occasions. I also often visit Mediterranean restaurants in New York and my cooking has been inspired by many of the dishes I have tried at various restaurants.
