Dairy is a hot topic these days and I for one am a proponent of this food group. I’ve heard people say it’s bad for their skin, it’s inflammatory, it gives them gas, and a whole host of other complaints about milk, yogurt, cheese – any and all things dairy.

But not me. I love pretty much all dairy foods – cheese, yogurt, milk (mostly with cakes and cookies, but love it nonetheless).

Lucky for me, my kids love dairy too. Yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese, or milk are their primary protein source every morning at breakfast and if cheese isn’t included at dinner or part of their morning snack at school, it’s usually on their afternoon snack plate.

So when the folks at Yogurt In Nutrition reached out to ask if they could profile me on their website and find out more about why I love yogurt and why I recommend it, especially for kids, I was more than happy to participate in their interview.

Reasons to Love Yogurt

I’ve previously shared some of the reasons I love yogurt, but the benefits are worth repeating:

  • Yogurt is an excellent snack option that helps you and your kids maintain a balanced diet throughout the day
  • Eating yogurt can help you with your weight-related goals, whether to lose weight or keep the weight off
  • Yogurt is rich in calcium and potassium, two nutrients of concern according to the Dietary Guidelines
  • Yogurt is extremely versatile and can be used in countless ways in the kitchen

Enjoy the versatility of Greek yogurt by adding it to baked goods, smoothies, sauces, dips, and more. @jlevinsonRD

  • Yogurt is a convenient protein-rich food to pack in your children’s lunch box or take when traveling
  • Yogurt, like other dairy-rich foods, has nutrients that support bone health
  • Yogurt is a healthy carbohydrate and one that can be part of a diabetic diet (particularly plain yogurts and Greek varieties)
  • Yogurt is one of the top brain foods thanks to the amino acid tyrosine that plays a role in memory and alertness

I really can go on about the benefits of yogurt, but I want you to get a chance to read my interview!! To find out some more reasons to love yogurt, why I recommend it, the health benefits for kids, and some of my thoughts on helping your kids develop healthy eating habits, head on over to my interview at Yogurt In Nutrition!

  1. Great interview. I love your tip to mix flavored yogurt with plain yogurt. I’ll be trying that with my son!
I am also a big fan of yogurt and dairy. It is something my whole family loves – which this dietitian loves!

    1. Thanks so much Brittany! Definitely give the halfsies trick a try with your son – would love to hear how it goes!

    1. So glad you agree Sonali! And it makes me happy to hear Sienna likes yogurt too – such a good food for the little ones!

  2. I was born with a dairy allergy, so we aren’t friends, but I do love the idea of yogurt and wish so many of the dairy-free brands didn’t have all that sugar! I’ve been working around it. Great post!

    1. I know this one isn’t for you Alisa – I’m sorry you can’t have yogurt, but you do such a great job making do with all the dairy-free brands. Hopefully companies will be able to improve to make it with less sugar. Thanks for commenting!

  3. Fun interview Jessica! Many of my clients don’t tolerate dairy well, but I think it’s very individual, and fortunately my family and I enjoy it {especially cheese and yogurt for me!} so our fridge is always stocked w/ a variety of dairy products. Right now I’m reading “Yogurt Culture” and can’t wait to make some of the savory yogurt recipes in the book-yum!

    1. It’s unfortunate how many people can’t tolerate dairy – I really feel bad for them because I don’t know how I would get by! So glad you can tolerate dairy and that you enjoy it! I can’t wait to see what you make from the book!

  4. It’s always refreshing to hear a positive take on a typically controversial or negative topic. And definitely to each their own. But we think yogurt is delicious! Love these ideas.

    1. Thanks so much for your feedback Emily! I’m so glad you enjoy yogurt and think it’s a great addition to a healthy diet.

  5. I always have a hefty supply of yogurt on hand and have enjoyed making my own. In recent years, I’ve gotten more interested in using yogurt in savory preparations rather than just sweet. It is so versatile. Nice to hear some more about the nutrition benefits in your post!

    1. That’s awesome you’ve made your own yogurt Katie! I think using yogurt for savory recipes is really fun and a nice change of pace – glad you enjoy using it in that way!

  6. I love yogurt because of it’s versatility in the kitchen, but also just as is! I think it’s super important to educate consumers about reading labels and checking ingredient lists on yogurt. So often I have clients who tell me they have yogurt as a snack, but it’s one of those “dessert” style yogurts pretty much equivalent to ice cream.

    1. So important to educate on reading the labels. It irks me when people say they don’t eat yogurt because it has so much sugar when they don’t realize a lot of the sugar is natural lactose!

  7. […] mix dairy and meat, this is a great treat to have at the end of a meat meal. I often use yogurt to reduce some of the fat and maintain moisture in baked goods, but this time I used natural […]

  8. When I was placed in a rehab facility after I fractured 4 back ribs, I told them I loved yogurt. Consequently, I received yogurt with every meal.
